There are several required trainings for graduate students, as well as many other opportunities to advance your academic and professional skills as well as network with professors and peers outside of classes. Here are some of the great trainings and events you can look forward to during your time at USU.

Provided by the Research and Development Office, there are five grant writing workshops you can choose to attend: Getting Started as a Grant Writer, Write Winning Grant Proposals, Writing Grants within Arts & Humanities, the Proposal Writing Institute and Agency Specific Grant Writing Workshops.

Research Integrity

Responsible Conduct of Research Training

Enhance your research and ethics skills by taking Responsible Conduct of Research Training. Training is required for all PhD students and students funded by NIH, NSF, and USDA-NIFA. It covers research misconduct, mentor/trainee relationship, data management, research collaboration, authorship, publication, peer review, and conflicts of interest.

Sexual Misconduct Prevention Trainings

All incoming graduate students are required to take an online sexual assault prevention course during their first semester at USU. You can learn more about how to complete the course by clicking on the box below.

Graduate Student Social

Graduate Student Socials

Held four times per year, the socials provide a regular opportunity to mingle with peers and enjoy time outside of your lab. All graduate students are welcome to attend, enjoy free food, music and occasionally, a rousing game of bingo.

USU TA Training Workshop

Teaching Assistant Training

This course is required for all teaching assistants. Native English speakers may take the course online and non-native English speakers can take the class in August or September. There is no fee for this course.

Employee Sexual Harassment Prevention Training

Graduate students who are Teaching Assistants or are otherwise employed at the university are also required to complete an employee sexual harassment prevention training either online or in-person during their first semester at USU. Graduate Training Series

Graduate Training Series

Held monthly during the school year, the Graduate Training Series is a workshop aimed at enhancing students’ early professional skills. GrTS covers topics such as academic mentor/mentee relationships, mental health resources, finding a job outside academia, developing presentation skills, and funding your research.

Not sure when to defend your dissertation or how to schedule it? Unsure about the next steps to take toward commencement? Attend a Thesis/Dissertation Information Session. Held five times a year, a member of the Graduate School Office will outline the process of commencement for you, and will answer any of your questions.

Research Week

Every April the Merrill-Cazier Library comes alive as student and faculty researchers are honored for their accomplishments, and present their research to their peers. Plan on participating in Student Research Symposium, Faculty Author Exhibition and more events during the week.
