There are several required trainings for graduate students, as well as many other opportunities to advance your academic and professional skills and network with professors and peers outside of classes. Here are some of the great trainings and events you can look forward to during your time at USU

Take a break from your labs and textbooks and come join the grad school for some fun events with free food! Meet grad students from other programs, network, and make connections. All grad students are welcome, so come enjoy friends and food at a grad student social!

Responsible Conduct of Research Training

Enhance your understanding of research ethics with Responsible Conduct of Research training. This online training is available to all students, but it is required of all students who entered Doctoral degree programs after July 2013, and of all MS/A (thesis), MA, and MFA students who entered those programs after March 2020.

Thesis and Dissertation Information Sessions

Not sure when to defend your dissertation or how to schedule it? Unsure about the next steps to take toward commencement? Attend a Thesis/Dissertation Information Session. Held five times a year, these sessions are led by a member of the Graduate School Office who will outline the process of commencement for you and answer any of your questions.

Graduate Student Proposal Writing Seminar

Provided by the Office of Research, the graduate student proposal writing seminar provides a framework of how to place a proposal in the context of a project. The approaches taught can also be applied to planning and writing a thesis project or paper for publication.

Graduate Training Series

Held monthly during the school year, the Graduate Training Series is a workshop aimed at enhancing students’ early professional skills. GrTS covers topics such as academic mentor/mentee relationships, mental health resources, finding a job outside academia, developing presentation skills, and funding your research.

Sexual Misconduct Prevention Trainings

All incoming graduate students are required to take an online sexual assault prevention course during their first semester at USU. You can learn more about how to complete the course by clicking on the box below.

Teaching Assistant Training

This course is required for all teaching assistants. Native English speakers may take the course online and non-native English speakers can take the class in August or September. There is no fee for this course.

Employee Sexual Harassment Prevention Training

Graduate students who are Teaching Assistants or are otherwise employed at the university are also required to complete an employee sexual harassment prevention training, either online or in-person during their first semester at USU. Research Week

Every April, the Merrill-Cazier Library comes alive as student and faculty researchers are honored for their accomplishments and present their research to their peers. Plan on participating in the Student Research Symposium, Faculty Author Exhibition, and more events during the week.
