Research Week 2018

Research Week Gala Utah State University

At this year’s Research Week we honored so many outstanding researchers and mentors, and showcased fantastic research happening at USU. If you missed anything, here’s a recap.

Friday, April 6 was the inaugural event, the Research Week Gala where Researchers of the Year from each college were honored, and the Graduate Research Mentor of the Year, Patricia Moyer-Packenham was announced. The D Wynne Thorne Career Research Awardee, Joyce Kinkead, was also honored for her years of research in the English Department. Throughout the week, other events were held to honor outstanding student researchers and their mentors, including the undergraduate faculty mentor of the year, Crescencio Lopez-Gonzalez.

Tuesday afternoon was the Faculty Author Exhibition, where we recognized all professors who published books in the past year. Three professors, Dr. David. F. Lancy, Dr. Tammy Proctor and Dr. Justin Julander presented about their books. You can read about their work here.

The D Wynne Thorne Lecture happened Wednesday, where last year’s awardee, Joanne Tschanz, shared her research on Alzheimer’s disease. If you missed it, the lecture will be available on the Office of Research YouTube page shortly.

Student Research Symposium Utah State University

Thursday was the Student Research Symposium, where students from all disciplines presented their research. Each student was judged on their ability to effectively communicate their research to judges from faculty and other research and speaking fellows. Over 200 students participated with either an oral or poster presentation. Several piano majors also presented their program notes and played pieces on the second floor of the library.

Ignite was the concluding event for Research week where six student researchers spoke, four of which were graduate students. Their topics ranged from Castes in India to vocal fry as well as how linguistics and chemistry overlap. Videos will be up within the month on the Ignite website and the Office of Research YouTube Channel. If you can’t wait, you can watch previous years on both sites.

Thank you to all who attended events and made research week a success!
