Biology

Gavin originates from Cedar City, Utah. He attended his undergraduate at Southern Utah University, where he found an immense passion for education through outreach clubs and science. Currently, he is a third-year Master’s student in the Biology Department at Utah State University, focusing intently on aphid evolution and phylogenetics. He serves as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for Human Physiology Lab, providing individualized support to students throughout the semester. Gavin’s experience spans a variety of courses, including Organismal Biology, Genetics Lab, Intro Biology, and Insect Systematics. Beyond his academic responsibilities, Gavin is deeply invested in professional development, having eared awards and actively participating in conference presentations showcasing teaching and speciation research. He’s also a leader within the Biology Graduate Student Association, advocating for graduate student development. Gavin’s research and teaching combine to create a strong foundation for his future career as a teacher. He hopes to continue his education and research as a PhD student. With interests broadly in entomological and genetics-based things. At home, Gavin loves his role as a father to his three-year-old son, Griffin. Griffin constantly imparts valuable lessons to Gavin, such as patience and a fresh perspective on the world. With the support of his loving wife, Ashley, Gavin also enjoys exploring the outdoors and gardening.
