Graduate Teaching Training

Graduate teaching training is required for graduate students serving in instructional roles at Utah State University, including Gradate Grader, Graduate Teaching Assistants and Graduate Instructors. This requirement applies whether or not the position is part of a graduate assistantship. Graduate Graders may be hired on an hourly or flat fee basis rather than as graduate assistants, but they are still required to complete the appropriate training. Students should complete the required CEUS training before beginning their grading, teaching, or instructional responsibilities.

CEUS 7901, CEUS 7902, and CEUS 7903 are one time training requirements for graduate students. Once you successfully complete the required training, you do not need to repeat it if you continue in the same instructional role in future semesters. If your role changes, such as moving from a Graduate Teaching Assistant to a Graduate Instructor, then additional training is required.

Course Titles and Descriptions: Graduate Teaching Training

The graduate teaching training will be offered as three separate CEUS courses that can be taken simultaneously based on the graduate student's training needs.

CEUS 7901 Graduate Grader Training

This course provides graduate students with the essential information and skills needed to be successful as a Graduate Grader at Utah State University. Topics include DRC accommodations, Canvas grading, professional communication, assessment practices, and academic integrity. Students will also complete the required Learn Blue Graduate Student Employee Trainings as part of the course. Graduate Graders, Graduate Teaching Assistants and Graduate Instructors must complete this first course before beginning their assigned grading, teaching assistant or graduate instructor responsibilities.

CEUS 7902 Graduate Teaching Assistant Training

This course provides an introduction to the information and skills needed to be successful as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Utah State University. Topics include professional responsibilities, student accommodations, how students learn, communication with supervisors, and teaching strategies. Students will learn practical strategies they can use to support student learning and succeed in their teaching assistant role. Graduate Teaching Assistants and Graduate Instructors must complete the CEUS 7901 and CEUS 7902 before beginning their teaching assistant or graduate instructor responsibilities.

CEUS 7903 Graduate Instructor Training

This course provides graduate students with the information and skills needed to be successful as a Graduate Instructor at Utah State University. Topics include understanding the Graduate Instructor role, preparing your course and syllabus, planning your first week of class, engaging students, building learning communities, providing timely feedback, communicating with students, and creating opportunities for student learning. Students will also create resources they can use in their own teaching and keep as part of their Graduate Instructor Toolkit. Graduate Instructors must complete CEUS 7901, CEUS 7902, and CEUS 7903 before beginning their graduate instructor responsibilities.

Timeline

CEUS 7901, 7902, and 7903 are offered during the first 7 weeks of spring and fall semester and the second 7 weeks of summer semester.

Cost

CEUS 7901, 7902, and 7903 are offered at no cost to graduate students.

Enrollment

Students register for CEUS 7901, 7902, and 7903 through Banner, just like any other course. These CEU courses are separate from degree coursework and do not count toward the number of courses students can take for their degree. Grades are recorded on a separate CEU transcript.

Applying as a Nondegree Seeking Student

Incoming graduate students who have not yet started taking classes but have an instructional role at Utah State University, such as a Graduate Grader, Graduate Teaching Assistant or Graduate Instructor, are strongly encouraged to complete the required CEUS training before beginning their instructional responsibilities. If you have not yet been admitted and/or matriculated into your graduate program, you will need to apply as a nondegree seeking student before you can register for the CEUS courses through Banner. Instructions for completing the nondegree seeking student application are provided below.

Instructions for Applying as a Nondegree Seeking Student

Follow the steps below to apply as a nondegree seeking student. This application is free and allows you to register for CEUS Graduate Teaching Training courses through Banner.

Step 1: Apply to Utah State University

Go to Apply to Utah State
Select the semester you plan to start.
Create an account.
Enter your name, phone number, and address, then select Next Step.
Under “I’d like to start in,” select the semester you plan to attend.
Under “I’d like to take classes in,” select the location where you plan to attend.
Under “I’d like to study at the level of,” select Undergraduate.
Under “I am interested in studying,” select All other nondegree seeking.
Complete the account setup.

You will receive an email with instructions for activating your account. Follow the instructions in the email to activate your account and create a password.

Step 2: Start Your Application

Select Start New Application.
Answer the initial questions based on your situation.
Under “Which of the following best describes your reason for applying to USU?”, select “I'm not pursuing a degree but want to take classes (for prerequisites, personal interest, transferring credit, or auditing).”
Continue answering the questions based on your situation.
Select the term you plan to attend and the location where you plan to attend

Step 3: Select Your Academic Program

Under “Select Academic Program,” you will choose

All other nondegree seeking for general courses

Under “Select Focus Area/Concentration,” enter the reason you are attending USU, such as auditing courses or personal enrichment.

Select Start Application to continue.

Step 4: Complete Your Application

Your application will open with several sections. Select Start next to each section and complete the information based on your situation.

Once all sections are complete, certify and submit your application. There is no charge to submit this application. If you are being asked to pay an application fee, the wrong application type has been selected.

Identity Verification

USU requires additional identity verification for all nondegree seeking students to help protect personal information and comply with federal regulations. After you submit your application, you will receive an email with a link to a secure third-party service to complete the identity verification process.
