Biology
Callie Newson is a fourth-year Ph.D. student in Dr. Erin Bobeck's lab within the Biology Department at Utah State University. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Utah State University in 2019. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of pain, investigating endogenous receptors, neuropeptides, neural circuitry, and sex differences to advance understanding in this critical area of neuroscience. Teaching has been a cornerstone of Callie's graduate experience. She has served as a teaching assistant for Neurobiology, Human Anatomy, and Neurophysiology Laboratory courses and as the instructor of record for Neurophysiology Laboratory. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes inclusivity, critical thinking, and resilience, integrating innovative strategies such as "desirable difficulties" to inspire student growth. Beyond the classroom, Callie has mentored undergraduate researchers, guiding them in molecular and behavioral techniques fostering independent thinking. Callie's passion for education extends into the community. As the head of USU's Neuroscience Outreach Program, she leads a team that introduces neuroscience to local K–12 classrooms through engaging, hands-on activities. She has impacted over 650 students by fostering curiosity and making science accessible. Callie aspires to become a professor, combining her dedication to research with her commitment to mentoring and training the next generation of scientists.
